Mrs. Mayers is happily teaching ESOL!
I am now happily teaching ESOL to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade ESOL level 1 & 2 students at Sunset Park. I am working hard to help my students learn to read and speak in English with fluency. At the same time, you can hear me practicing a little Spanish. My comprehension is getting better too.

Learning Today
Learning Today is a web-based computer program purchased for our English Language Learners (ELL's). This wonderful program assesses a student's reading abilities and weaknesses. The program then prescribes and tutors your child in the skills they are weak in. My ESOL students will be working with this program on a daily basis. Because this is a web-based program, your child is able to practice and log on from any computer connected to the internet.

Compass Learning
This wonderful program  is used to help our ELL students learn and practice using the English language. Our classroom is wonderfully outfitted with 15 brand new Dell computer with special headphones that also have built-in microphones. My ESOL students will be working with this program on a daily basis also. Unfortunately, they are not able to access the program outside of our classroom.

The Kendall Branch Public Library on Saturdays
Check it out! What better place to spend a Saturday morning than your local library. Check out some books at your reading level. The Kendall Branch has a loose leaf notebook (3-ring binder) with a list of our Accelerated Reader books/tests that we have at Sunset Park Elementary. It is at the children's desk. If you check out a book on the list, you can take the AR test at school when you finish the book!

Mrs. Mayers will be attending FETC - The Florida Educators Technology Conference again this year
This year FETC is January 23-27, 2007. Many teachers are looking forward to the chance to meet with educators from around the state of Florida to solve old and new problems in the area of technology and integration with the curriculum. I will be posting some great websites for you to use when I return!

The Accelerated Reader Program has taken off running!!!
Mrs. Mayers ESOL students will be reading blue dot Accelerated Reader books and taking Accelerated Reader tests. I will show them how to use the program to show their mastery and comprehension of the material they have read. They will also be earning points toward rewards and reading requirements.

SchoolNotes
If you haven't already visited this wonderful site, I urge you to check it out. Each week I will post the homework assignments and information about what we are studying in the classroom. I will also try to provide active links to sites that coincide with what we are studying. Please visit each week as I update that page every weekend for the upcoming school week. I am able to make changes on that page by myself and post changes immediately on the Internet. Look for classwork and homework help there!

Getting off to a good start includes...
In order to do a good job it is important that you are prepared. This means that you are in school, on time, every day. It means that you have with you the materials necessary to complete your work. Please be sure to check your school supplies periodically to see if you need to replenish any supplies. I ask that your pencils be sharpened before you come to my class.

Sick Senctences, Grammar Gremlins, and Punctuation Pitfalls
Students edit sentences for common types of errors and use the traditional editing marks they are taught. Then they have to rewrite each of the sentences correctly. This work is corrected together so that students can see their mistakes.
