Celebrating Reading During Library Week...
Wear the Most Words Day - (Wednesday, April 16, 2008): There were 22 classes that were awarded prizes for the "most words"! The most creative kids had copied out of a dictionary and took 2 days to make their shirts! Way to go! Most outstanding teacher was Mrs. Rodriguez with her foam words based on a book! Fabulous!
Wear Your Favorite Book Character Hat Day - (Thursday, April 17, 2008): Students have decorated hats and made hats about their favorite storybook characters. Many teachers have been spotted wearing their hat as well. (Mrs. Hoffman selected from the book "Chocolate Fever".)
Congratulations to Mrs. Barreiro and her students!
Just to let you know, Sunset Park had two first place winners in the Spanish Haiku Poem competition in 4th grade, and two first place winners in the 5th grade competition as well.
Please go check out their work which is on display at The Fair.

find a more caring and competent group of women who work so hard to
help
everyone.

Developing responsibility in children
Responsibility can not be
"taught", it must be given.
Some ways to
do this are:
Never do for a child what he can do for himself.
Encourage a child's first attempts to help you or to do things for himself. (Remember, he is learning so he will not do the task as well as you.
Give a child credit for trying to help out.
Give plenty of time to learn.
Don't criticize or make fun of poor results. Encourage him to try again and carefully steer him toward a better way.
When a child is ready for larger responsibilities, let him take them on.
Let a child know you trust and have confidence in him.
Praise more than you punish. Praise for efforts as well as performance.
Let your child make mistakes without feeling guilty.
Be sure the child knows that his help helps the whole family.
Admit your own mistakes when you make them.
Never make fun of or ridicule a child.
Don't keep punishing for the same offense. Help the child find a better behavior.
Don't demand more of a child than he can give.
Remember, "A child needs encouragement as a plant needs water and sunshine."
Let your child make some decisions for himself.
